Centre of Development Institute

Established in January 1999, the HSE Centre of Development Institute aims to provide quality analysis of the macroeconomic situation and economic policy in the Russian Federation, with a particular focus on research and forecasts of trends and developments in the banking system and monetary policy. Since 2009, the Centre has been operating as an institute at HSE.

The Centre’s Mission

The Centre aims to provide in-depth analysis of the current state of the Russian economy through such activities as generating short-term and medium-term forecasts.

Projects

The HSE Centre of Development Institute produces commentaries on state and business (twice a month), composite indices on economic conditions and other cyclical indicators (monthly), composite indices of regional economic activity (monthly), consensus appraisals of the Russian economy (quarterly), analytical reviews of the situation in the banking system and real economy sector (quarterly), analytical reviews of key sectors and markets (quarterly), and thematic reports on economic issues.

The analytical materials of the Centre are distributed among government agencies, Russian commercial organizations, mass media and information agencies, and posted online (at http://dcenter.hse.ru/). The Centre carries out research projects initiated by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, the Central Bank of Russia, the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, and major Russian corporations and banks.

Key Areas of Research

  • Macroeconomic analysis and forecasting, research into problems of economic growth, business cycles, resilience of financial and real economic sectors to external shocks;
  • Analysis of problems related to pricing and the non-pricing competitive ability of Russian producers within internal and external markets, with respect to areas like labour productivity, specific labour costs, industrial output, etc.;
  • Analysis of the effectiveness of such tools as monetary and credit, budgetary, tax and other economic policy measures in order to meet high priority goals of social and economic development;
  • Research of innovative factors impacting on the development of the Russian economy and the influence of research and innovations on economic growth;
  • Research of interrelations between institutional, social and macroeconomic indicators in regards to Russia’s development coupled with complex analysis of the effectiveness of state activities.
