Renting an apartment

HSE University provides assistance in finding a suitable flat through Student Housing Office (the request should be sent to sho@hse.ru, cc ifaculty.support@hse.ru).

Apart from the option mentioned above, Telegram channel created by HSE employees can be recommended. Here you can find apartments to rent, offer an apartment for rent or get to know the current prices for housing rent.

There are also some trustworthy estate agents and relocation agencies that have English-speaking staff, e.g., Etagi.

One of the most popular rental agencies in Russia is CIAN. If you have someone who can help you contact Russian-speaking agents, you may be able to find an apartment via this agency.

Rental prices depend on specific requirements you have for your accommodation. Location, parking facilities, the number of bedrooms, interior design, and security features are some key factors influencing the price. More detailed information on rented accommodation prices is available on the Cost of living in Moscow pages.

Fraudulent offers

Please bear in mind that there are many fraudulent offers on the Internet. Such offers might not differ from the real ones and may seem quite convincing. They contain addresses, photographs of apartments/rooms, and contact details. Here are some tips to avoid any unpleasant situations:

  1. Carefully review all the information about the property you intend to rent;
  2. Always sign a lease agreement, complete an acceptance certificate and keep a record of all payments;
  3. Inform the flat owner in advance that you are a foreign citizen and they are obliged to provide you with registration;
  4. Do not make any payments before viewing the property you plan to rent. In reputable agencies, a flat owner will first show you the apartment, suggest that you check the documents, sign the lease agreement and the acceptance certificate, and only then ask you for an advance payment;
  5. Please make sure that the flat owner is not pushing you to sign a contract, read the agreement thoughtfully and do not hesitate to ask questions;
  6. Please discuss with the flat owner beforehand how you are going to pay for housing and communal services.

If you decide to rent an apartment, here you can find the information about payment for housing and communal services.
