The HSE Look - October 2017

In its 34th issue The HSE Look presents HSE campus in St. Petersburg in an interview with its Director Sergey Kadochnikovand with DAAD long-term Associate Professor at the School of History, Dietmar Wulff. As per tradition, The HSE Look gives brief introductions of the new tenure-track faculty who joined HSE this September. In this issue we are also launching a new feature: a column ‘Discovering HSE and Russia’ written by international faculty for their colleagues so as to help them explore the rich cultural and geographical variety offered by Russian cities. On September 14, the Higher School of Economics is again welcoming guests at Moscow’s Gorky Park to celebrate HSE Day – an extraordinary event that has become a tradition of citywide proportions. HSE Day has a lot to offer for everyone and is open to international students and faculty members.

The HSE Look July 2017 - ICEF 20th Anniversary

With HSE turning 25 this year, The HSE Look will be telling more about HSE’s outstanding projects, and in its 33rd issue we are focusing on International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF), which is perhaps best known for its successful double degree Bachelor’s programme with the University of London. In addition to the interview with ICEF Director, Sergey Yakovlev, in which he speaks about ICEF history, achievements and future plans, the readers will also learn about ICEF team, its study programmes, research,  special opportunities for talented students, as well as about the extracurricular work with students and international cooperation.

Today, ICEF is proud to be academic home to over 20 international researchers with PhD degrees in economics, finance and social sciences, representing different countries and continents: Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Ukraine, Argentina, Australia, and India. ICEF faculty members share their stories of joining the team for The HSE Look readers.

ICEF Informal Curriculum

ICEF is known not only for its study programmes, but also for its rich extracurricular activities, including career services, the involvement of alumni, and social outreach. Sergey Konyshev, Head of the Academic Support Department, and Polina Beloborodova, ICEF Career Centre manager, told The HSE Look how and what students learn through the informal curriculum.

International Perspective

On June 4, 2017, HSE is holding ‘The Whole World at HSE’ festival, dedicated to the cultures of different peoples. It’s a great opportunity for many international students to share information about their country’s culture and explain how Russian culture might be perceived by people with a different mentality. HSE international students and faculty have shared their views on both their and our respective cultures.

The HSE Look February 2017 - Drive for the Change

The February issue of  The HSE Look  is focused on how HSE makes its education model more flexible in response to global transformations, and two Academic Supervisors of English-taught programmes share their experience in an interview.   The HSE Look  also presents a new series of public events for discussions on philosophy, and the upcoming visits of guest scholars and lecturers to different HSE departments, as well as the open call for funding their visits.

Discussing Research Together

Joint efforts tend to bring better and more interesting results: that’s why the School of Philosophy has launched its Colloquium meetings where HSE faculty (both internationally and locally recruited) and visiting scholars will be presenting and discussing their research. The events are open to everyone, and the first talk, devoted to a popular for February topic of love, gathered faculty and students alike.

Charity Drive at HSE during Good Deed Month

On March 11, 2017, HSE will host the ‘Heroes Among Us’ charity festival. The month leading up to it is Good Deed Month, organized by the Open Your Eyes student project. People are encouraged to use this month to do good. Check out the ideas below – having a big positive impact doesn’t always mean putting a lot of effort in.
