Are All Things Equally Expressible in Language?

On 31st March - 1st April 2015, HSE School of Linguistics is holding a series of lectures in English on research into the role of language as the interface between the mind and society. In 'New Perspectives in Semantic Typology' Asifa Majid, Professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen will give four lectures - a general introduction to semantic typology, the language of perception, the body, and event semantics.

Mathematics and the Arts: What does Geometry and Calculus have to do with Salvador Dali and War and Peace?

On Tuesday 31st March 2015, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, Professor of Mathematical Logics at the University of Turin, will give a public lecture at HSE titled ‘Mathematics and the Arts’. The lecture is held in cooperation with Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and will examine the deep and close relationships between the objects of Mathematics and of the Arts.Professor Odifreddi, who is also a well-known journalist will talk about ‘a mathematical reading of the arts’, and will present a short history of the visual arts from a mathematical perspective. He talked to the HSE English News service about the surprising connections his unusual approach reveals.

Vladimir Unkovski-Korica, an Assistant Professor in History, is completing his monograph The Economic Struggle for Power in Tito’s Yugoslavia: From World War II to Non-Alignment. It is in the process of being published by I.B. Tauris. The HSE Look talked to Unkovski-Korica about his topic and the highs and lows of the writing process.

Global Expert to Speak on Advances in Neuroeconomics

On March 25, Samuel McClure, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, will give a lecture called ‘Neuroeconomics: Cognitive and Neural Processes in Delay Discounting’ at HSE. Samuel McClure recently agreed to speak with the HSE news service about his research and what he aims to accomplish in terms of collaboration with specialists at HSE.

Unemployment, Labour Supply Variations and Precarious Work

On April 7-10, the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research at HSE will hold the Fifth LCSR International Workshop ‘Social and Cultural changes in cross-national perspective: Subjective Well-being, Trust, Social capital and Values’ which will take place as part of the XVI April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. Attending this year’s conference is Arne L. Kalleberg, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina. He recently spoke with the HSE news service about the challenges facing labour force research, the situation with unemployment in Russia, and his interest in developing collaboration with researchers at HSE.

Volgy, Professor at the School of Government and Public Policy, University of Arizona USA and Executive Director of the International Studies Association is a political scientist specialising in international politics, democratic processes and domestic public policy. At the XV International April Conference this year Professor Volgy will be delivering two papers.
