Russian customs connected with winter holidays don’t differ much from those followed in Europe and the western world in general. Having said that, we ought to mention that some things don’t work here quite the way they work in other countries. We celebrate Christmas after New Year’s Day, which is the biggest and longest holiday across the country, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. Our Santa Claus – Ded Moroz - has a granddaughter who is his constant companion; our traditional New Year’s table is incomplete without caviar and “Soviet” champagne. The HSE LooK offers a Russian version of the festive season kindly shared with us by Natalia Slioussar and Natalia Karmaeva.
This year winner of the respected Fields medal Andrey Okunkov became the new head of HSE’s International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics. We welcome aboard Matteo Feurra, who joined HSE in September 2014 as Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences. Dr. Feurra spoke to The HSE LooK about his research and work plans.
Each year, HSE holds a competition for the best teacher. For the first time, this year’s elections for the best teachers will be open to foreign students at HSE on academic exchange programmes. Elena Artyukhova and Svetlana Samsonova speak about how voting will be organized for foreign students.
On December 5, the Higher School of Economics hosted the Piano Evening for Two. The event lasted two hours, during which time Michel Grabisch, Professor of Computer Sciences at University Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne, and Sergei Erofeev, Vice Rector of HSE, performed compositions by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ravel and Bach.
